User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0

When booting PC from cold then invoking FFox version 3 my home page specified in the options panel does not always load, I get a blank page. If I then close FFox and re-invoke it, it loads fine and continues to load ok while PC is running. When the problem happens If I click the home page tool bar button it loads ok.

I have set the home page to http://www.orange.co.uk/ and "show my home page on startup". When exiting FFox I clear all 8 categories of private data.

Unfortunately I cannot force this to happen but it has been happening about every other day since I upgraded (I think I upgraded on the day of release) When it does happen I checked the options panel and confirmed that home page is specified as required.

Hope I've given enough detail.

Regards,
Ned.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. turn off pc
2. boot pc
3. invoke FFox
Actual Results:
FFox loads with a blank tab

Expected Results:
The "Orange" home page should have loaded

Running theme Walnut 1.8.33

Wouldn't normally bother you but there used to be a virus/trojan/malware/whatever associated with setting one's home page to Blank so it made me a bit twitchy.
This works fine for me on Windows XP. Have you tried:

- Firefox's safe-mode to exclude extension/theme problems
- a new profile
- a reinstall in a new EMPTY folder?

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder

I've now managed to reproduce the error reliably, so I'm surprised it works for you Ria.
To reproduce the error it is necessary to:

1. Setup FFox so that when exiting all 8 categories of private data are cleared down.
2. Load FFox and open a number of tabs.
3. Quit FFox electing to "Save and Quit".
4. Click "OK" to clear private data.
5. Load FFox a second time -> this time it loads with a blank single tab.

Now, clearly saving the state of FFox on quiting and then clearing private data is a bit of a conflict of intents so I guess it's only to be expected that FFox wouldn't load with the same state as before (mind you a warning to that effect might be a good idea) BUT I would still have expected FFox to default to loading my specified home page.

Hope this has made things clear now.

Regards,
Ned

You mean it should not clear data in session restore? That is "history".
If I just select "Quit" on the dialog I get my homepage because it's not in the session restore data.
In that case this bug is possibly a dupe.
Hi Ria,

Well I'm certainly not trying to "dupe" you or anyone else.

Let me be more precise. If I hit "Save and Exit" when I've got multiple tabs open and then click "OK" to clear private data, including the "History", I think it's perfectly reasonable that on re-loading FFox it doesn't re-load my tabs as they were, since I've asked FFox to do conflicting things (as I say, it might be nice to give a warning somewhere along the way, to wake bozo's like me up ... duh!).

What I would expect though is that in these circumstances FFox defaults to loading my home page, which is not part of any session data. Not just load a blank tab - which is alarming because of the viruses that used to target blank startup pages. I know this probably isn't a security issue in this case, it's just alarming and unexpected behaviour (behavior).

Regards,
Ned.
Dupe = duplicate. Yeah, but by choosing for the "Save and Quit" option you made clear that it should load from the (cleared) session restore data, not your homepage.

Most of this bug is INVALID as what's described is the expected behavior (well, it's at least expected if you happen to know the design decisions behind the code).

That's planned for the next release (haven't got a bug number handy, though).

That's mostly bug 343876.

Summary: Home page doesn't always load on startup → Home page doesn't always load on startup (when choosing "Save and Quit" at exit)
I have this same problem since I upgraded to Firefox 3.0 (and now in 3.1). But it also occurs when I close with Quit as well as with Quit And Save. When I open Firefox anew I get a blank page, blank URL line, and blank bookmarks (which I keep open in a sidebar.) The only way to get Firefox to work again is to reboot, when it comes up normally with my homepages, bookmarks, and URL displayed--at least until I quit the app. I run in XP SP3. This seems like a real bug to me.
Alan: You're quite surely observing a different bug. So please verify that the behavior you describe is (1) reproducible, (2) does happen in Safe Mode as well and (3) doesn't involve clearing private data. If all three are the case, file a new bug. Thanks.
