This is possibly related to bug 443540, or at least may be fixed in the same patch.

STR (In TB Trunk):

1) In IMAP, create filter to move messages with "LocalSub" in the subject to a folder "LocalSub" in Local Folders.
2) Create a saved search "VLocalSub" on the IMAP inbox (no subfolders) with criteria "LocalSub" contained in Subject
3) After creation, open the properties of VLocalSub and add the LocalSub folder as a searched folder.
4) Send and receive a message with LocalSub in the subject.

Expected results: Unread counts for VLocalSub increase when the new message is received

Actual results: Unread counts for VLocalSub do not change.

The behavior goes away when the application is closed and reopened. I assume that listeners to the new folder are not being added to the virtual folder listener when the search folder list is modified.
Still repro and the unread count is not increased even after restarting TB. It does refresh after I click VLocalSub, though.

Btw., hi Kent, now I'm doing for TB the QA nomad thing I mentioned when we talked at the LibreOffice conf last year :)
