It'd be great if there was an XML version of the phone book (obviously behind the HTTP auth) so people who might want to parse it wouldn't have to parse the HTML...
what's an example use case for this?
A mobile app that wishes to display the phone book in a cleaner way.

most stuff I can think of that'd want that kind of data probably knows how to (or can be taught to) speak LDAP.  If you have your credentials (same ones you use on the http auth currently) ldaps://ldap.mozilla.org/ works.
Actually, scratch this in favor of upgrading Zimbra to support multiple address books, server side: http://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=29749
