with "any format" you mean which used plugins that are not playing sound ? Firefox doesn't play sound itself.. Do you mean only that the flash player doesn't play sound ? Which Version of this plugin are you using. loook in about:plugins to get the plugin version.
I know firefox does not play sound itself. I have no idea what plug-in is being accessed. All I know is that immediately after upgrading to the latest version of firefox - all sound - no matter how that sound is suppose to be created - no longer plays when using firefox. I can have the same web page opened in IE and the sound plays so I know my speakers work. It can be music on Myspace - a video at Comedy Central - an audio only file at cnn.com - it can even be one of those stupid advertisements that when you mouseover the graphic a sound is played. I get nothing - no sound when browsing in firefox.

If you right click for example on a video, you should be able to see which plugin is used. We have a few people with such a problem, one solution for them was to install the flash 10 beta, you could try that but it's a beta and some pages will not work with this plugin. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
After shutting down the pc (power off) and restarting, the problem seems to have fixed itself. If it happens again, I'll make a note using the info you provided above. Thank you.
