The option to open the new link in a new tab is removed in FF3 which could be restored.
As can be seen from the link provided, many people still want this feature. We don't need to provide a GUI option for this but at least in the about:config list.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a website.
2. Enter a new address and hit enter.
3. The website replaces the existing page rather than open a new tab.
Actual Results:
The website replaces the existing page.

Expected Results:
A new tab should be opened for the new link if the setting is done.

This was removed as per this bug -- https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308862

Please put this back.
Uhm, bug 308862 removed the entry for an _unused_ pref.

If that pref actually did something for you, you must have had an extension installed (such as Tab Mix Plus) which got disabled during the update to Firefox 3.0. Updating that extension should fix your problem. If it does, please close this bug as INVALID.
There was an extension Tabbrowser Preferences which added this functionality but that project is dead.
If this will not be added, I guess it's "INVALID" feature request.
This bug was reported using Firefox 3.0 or older, which is no longer supported. The bug has also not been changed in over 500 days and is still in UNCO.
Reporter, please retest this bug in Firefox 3.6.10 or later using a fresh profile, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/managing+profiles. If you still see this problem, please update the bug. If you no longer see the bug, please set the resolution to RESOLVED, WORKSFORME.
