thunderbird restarts automatically when closed

If I either use file/exit or the "x" icon to close Thunderbird, it automatically restarts in a couple of minutes.  This is very annoying when either running a backup or using a program requiring more system resources.  This just starting in the last 2 weeks.  Unable to install latest update (2.0.0.17).

Expected Results:  
Thunderbird to stay closed
Please try in safe Mode, then install your new update, then restart in safe mode again.
