I think it would be a good idea to maybe highlight the search bar or have some other better visual indicator that the current view of the email folder is being filtered. Right now only the text in the search bar indicates this which is not always that obvious. This would 

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Type in search term in search bar
2. Go make coffee
3. Return and have heart attack thinking you have deleted all of your inbox
4. Realise your stupidity.
Actual Results:  
No visual indicator of filtered email list

Expected Results:  
Maybe yellow highlighted search bar.
Indeed, I also sometimes forget that I have some some filter criteria in the search bar. So I think we have (at least) 2 possible enhancements

a) something like red background for filter criteria input line?
   Soonds silly, but what if you filter for blanks? We should think about that
b) Indicator that some entries in a thread are invisible because of filter.
   I think that would be some real progress
