Is complex script enabled in your installation of Windows (in Settings | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | Languages, is the checkbox "Install files for complex script and right to left languages.." checked?). IE and Firefox 3 support complex script even if it's not enabled in the OS, but Firefox 2 and below rely on the OS support.
Seebug report 470407 check your old profile and the new profile in your profiles directory in C:\Documents and Settings\ user....\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. the problem went away in bug report 470407 as the old profile was causing ff3.0.5 to display improperly while 2.0.0.20 was ok. I do not know what exactly was the cause as the old profile was accidentally lost
