It would be nice if the user had the ability to set access keys for their bookmarks. The UI for this would fit nicely in the bookmark "Properties" dialog.

reassigning to matt and wondering why this wasn't done earlier in a mass change...

What kind of key combinations would Mozilla allow? Alt-B-letter, alt-char, ctrl-char, anything you can set in a Windows shortcut? There should (eventually) be one place where I could look to see all of the custom keyboard commands I've set up. Windows shortcuts don't give the user any way to see what shortcuts have been defined or where they are, which can be frustrating. See also bug 42858.

Netscape Nav Triage Team: changing milestone to future and marking wontfix

WONTFIX means that someone has decided that it is not in the best interest of the Mozilla project to fix the bug. The appropriate person to be making that decision I think would be the Mozilla Module Owner or the Component Owner and not a particular vendor triage team. I don't think that Wontfix is an appropriate resolution without some explanation of why this bug/feature should not be fixed/implemented. Future, helwanted, reassignment, something like that but not Wontfix. Reopening, adding Ben.

I get the impression at least some people are thinking of this in terms of a global keybinding -- sort of like "Press Ctrl-Alt-Y for www.yahoo.com", with the associated problem that it conflicts with whatever Ctrl-Alt-Y is already set to. What I'd love to see is user-definable hot-keys that *only* work within the context of the bookmark menu, much like the pre-defined b, f, and m for "Add _B_ookmark", "_F_ile bookmark...", and "Manage book_m_arks..." at the top of the menu. These keystrokes only take effect if the user has already activated the Bookmarks menu, (either by clicking on it, or by pressing Alt-B or its platform-dependent equivalent). From there, the user should be able define his/her own keystrokes for bookmarks and bookmark folders.

Kai, you can already do something similar using the location bar (Ctrl+L, bookmark keyword, enter), and when bug 67952 is fixed, you'll be able to do that in the bookmarks menu as well (Alt+B, first letter/number in bookmark name). Neither of those is as fast as a Ctrl+Alt shortcut.

Is there still good reason to keep this bug alive now that we have bookmark keywords?

Hmmm. I thought this bug concerned shortcuts for bookmark folders - personal bookmark folders. That way you could *really* never use the mouse - just alt-X to access the XXX folder. Shortcuts for individual bookmarks would be a plus (they could be per-folder, like a regular menu). Should I file a new bug for it?

I would like to have an assignable keyboark combo for bookmarks (especially bookmarklets). Imagine you have a bookmarklet for e.g. English translation of a current selection. Just drag the mouse and press the combination and you get the translation.

Another vote on Standa's use case (from a bookmarklet writer with a Bookmarks Toolbar swamped with frequently used tools crammed in under one/two letter long names just to have them fit and within quick reach). Yes, implementing this without a motherload of nifty keyboard customization views base support /could/ allow users create shortcut conflicts. It would still become a killer feature no other browser seems to have and bring Mozilla that much closer to the power of Emacs and similar kitchen sinks. (Well, Navigator actually had one customizable shortcut, "Radio" something, where the shortcut was hard coded to Alt+7. You /could/ tweak that URL to whatever you wanted using fairly obscene wizardry, though, and even /that/ was One Great Thing, however ridiculous, as usability goes.)

Shortcut keys are already in short supply. An extension like Keyconfig would be a solution for the small group of people who want this feature =>WONTFIX.
