Downloaded and installed Java (Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U11 from the Sun Website. Plug-in appears in about:plugins, however, when visiting a page that should launch it, (e.g. http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=JAX&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes), plug-in does not launch (see attached screenshot).

This is also an issue with Windows 7 x64. I'm running 32-bit Firefox and couldn't get it to work with either Java 32-bit or Java 64-bit. In the case of 64-bit, Java's plugin wouldn't show up in Firefox (which I wouldn't expect it to). The 32-bit Java does show up as a valid active plugin but just doesn't do anything when you try to launch a Java applet. Tried with a totally clean install to rule out addon interference. This forum thread indicates to me that this could be widespread among those running Windows 7 with Firefox. http://www.sevenforums.com/software/2359-java-firefox-7-64bit.html

This blog post, which has a work-around that works for me, indicates that Vista has this issue as well http://warnerchad.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-java-in-firefox-3-on-vista-64.html Makes me think that this bug is a duplicate. However, I can't find one to dupe it to. Tweaked the summary to make it more specific. Like Chris, I'm running 32-bit Firefox & Java on the 64-bit version of Windows. Also corrected the platform.
Hardware: x86 → x86_64
Summary: Java plug-in not recognized in Windows 7 beta → 32 bit Java plug-in not recognized in 64 bit Windows 7 beta

Update 12 does have some improved 64-bit plugin stuff. http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/6u12.html Not sure if it makes a difference here.
WFM with Win7 x64, Java 1.6 u21 (32bit) and recent SeaMonkey/Firefox. I guess this is fixed in the meantime by Win7 final, Java and/or Mozilla.

This should work if you use a 32bit Firefox build
