Kevin what kind of protection software is running on your machine. Do you also experience this issue with a recent build of thunderbird 3.0beta that can be found at http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/downloads.php ?

When You shut down Tb which method are You using? If the X in Windows title bar, it is not a 100% reliable way to stop a running instance of Tb or Fx. The Exit in the File menu is a near 100% method. Have You looked at Windows Task Manager to see how many instances are shown?

If I stop and start thunderbird using file and exit then restart the program again there is two thunderbird.exe programs running in task manager, I have seen as many as five running at the sametime.

I few times a year I have managed to get multiple thunderbird.exe in taskmanager, so it is not unheard of. And at least in my case was not due to external factors - i.e. the startup issue is some core startup/profile bug. The "thunderbird not ending" shutdown problem(s) are more common that the startup problem.

I saw that with other xulrunner based apps too. Ff and Joost.

Not really a TB-specific issue then?

(In reply to comment #7) > Not really a TB-specific issue then? right, cause should not be TB

FWIW, I also run Windows NT 6.0 aka Vista. What seems to be needed to get to the bottom of the OP's case is a 'Debug' build that logs where the process stops running, that an instance is left running on that one system. As Lodoc said, this is more a Gecko core thing that effects just about all the Mozilla core code apps. Therefor I suggest this bug gets moved from Tb to Core 1.8.1 branch.

This is a most bizzare but interesting issue. Kevin, can you reproduce this with version 3? http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/ If you can, then we will want to take further steps to debug.
Summary: Hang during shut down → Hang during shut down. multiples of thunderbird.exe running with no error on startup

Kevin, please retest with v3.0.0 or 3.0.1 update, which should become available in Jan, early feb. The standard questions for hangs are as follows: please provide info for shutdown hangs: 1. cpu usage - is it high (pegged), zero, low, or other? 2. run netstat -a -b -o in a dos command window (or Mac equivalent) - how many connections are shown to your ldap server and (if imap) to your mail server? 3. if you are running lightning/calendar extension, does the shutdown hang happen without lightning? and please reference: bug 504971 comment 12 bug 504971 comment 15 related bugs - see "shutdown hang" query at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Bug_Queries also version 2 ... xref bug 496722 Task manager report 2 processes of Thunderbird. But it's easier to determine the cause of the hang conditions, than to determine why there are multiple processes.
Summary: Hang during shut down. multiples of thunderbird.exe running with no error on startup → Hang during shut down. multiples of thunderbird.exe running with no error on startup, no cpu
