User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032711 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.8
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032711 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.8

Web pages that have been saved locally are not displaying correctly. Saved pages appear to be missing styles and resources that were present in the original web page. Display of pages saved by firefox is also completely different than the original web page.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1). Go to the jwebunit website ( http://jwebunit.sourceforge.net/ ). Suggesting saving a page from this website as a test since this provided a very good example of the problem.

2). Right click on the main web page and select "Save As..."

3). Save the web page somewhere on the local drive. On Ubuntu there is an option in the save dialog specifying how to save the web page. Make sure that "Web page, complete" is selected.

4). Navigate to the location where the web page was stored and load the saved page back into firefox

At this point the web page that is loaded from the hard disk should display very differently than the real web page. Styles and elements of the original web page should be missing.
Actual Results:
The web page that was saved appears to be missing information. Styles and content are missing.

Expected Results:
The saved web page should save (and display in firefox) identical to the original web page.

I also tested this same process on Windows XP SP2 (also using firefox 3.0.8) and I see the exact same behavior. This seems to eliminate the problem being caused by local browser settings (since I see the same thing under Windows and Linux on two separate machines with totally different preferences). Furthermore I was able to run steps 1 - 4 using Opera 9.64 and this produces a saved web page that displays identically to the web page navigated to on the internet.

...Additionally I just tried loading the webpage saved locally using opera and this loads into firefox correctly. So the problem appears to be with the actual web page save using firefox and not the fact that the page is being displayed from the local drive as opposed to the internet.
This is a screenshot of the web page that I attempted to save. The screen shot shows the web page as it appears when navigated to on the internet.
This screen shot shows what the web page looks like in firefox after having saved it to the local drive. Note that content and styles from the original page are now missing.
1. I get exactly the same effect as hurleyjames@sbcglobal.net but with a different web site.

2. The fault essentially renders useless 'Save Page As\(Save as type\Web page, Complete', as pages of this form are many--hence many unusable saved web pages. Temporary solution: use a different browser [Opera 10].

3. This fault has been around a long time **5 years** and I've reported it previously (sorry I don't have ref) however check this ref: 'Bug 236686'. I note with annoyance the cavalier attitude and the way bug was dismissed when all you have to do was to save a page and verify the fault. 5 years on it is still not fixed. Seems to me you developers never use the product otherwise you would have come across it. Let's face it, it's pretty hard to miss if you use this function regularly.

3.1 Below, I've irrefutable evidence that the bug DOES EXIST, moreover I've shown it also exists in IE6 but not in Opera 10.

4. That web site is: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=1031&tag=nl.e539. Although many other blog pages on ZDNet will also reproduce the fault.

5. Fault is consistently reproducible.

6. Reality check: used other browsers IE6 and Opera 10 (build 1551) to do comparative test.

7. Test:

7.1 Cleared caches of all browsers, deleted all previous saves etc.

7.2 URL successively cut-and-pasted into all three 'cleaned' browsers, in each case the 'Web Page Complete' function was used to save the page. Three slightly different file names were used to prevent overwriting. Check done to see that both the HTML file and the '_files' directory were saved in each case. [Note: in Opera 'Web Page Complete' is called 'HTML with images'.]

7.3 In turn, each browser was used to open each of the three saved pages.

7.4 Care was taken to fully clean caches after every browser opening.

8. Results

8.1 The results of opening the page http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=1031&tag=nl.e539 saved by three different browsers.

OPENED BY | SAVED BY | RESULT

8.2 '_files' Directory Contents.

There was considerable variation in the number of files stored by each browser in its '_files' directory(ies), results are as follows:.

IE6 - 60 files in '_files' dir and 4 other directories
FF3.5b4 - 72 files in '_files' dir and 5 other directories
Opera10 - 112 files in '_files' dir and 0 (no other directories)

SUMMARY: The only browser to save the page correctly was Opera 10, although BOTH Firefox and IE6 could read the page saved by Opera 10.

8.2 IE7 was not used in the test as it was not installed on any nearby machine.

8.3 These tests were done and confirmed on two separate machines (Eee PC netbook with WinXP/Home/sp3 and a Gigabyte desktop with WinXP/Pro/sp3).

Clearly, this bug has a solution, otherwise Opera wouldn't have succeeded. If, after 5 years, you can't figure out how to fix it then just figure out what Opera has done. I'd begin by nicely asking the people at Opera what their definition of a Web page is (seems few know).

I'd now expect 'UNCONFIRMED' to go from this report.

I took some time to retest this issue today and I see the exact same problem that I reported a year ago. This time I tested using firefox 3.6.12 under Windows 7. OS doesn't seem to matter for reproducing the issue. It appears that the save functionality does not retrieve and save the stylesheet information used by a webpage.

At any rate to see the issue please follow the steps I included for reproducing at the top of this issue; the website link I had included still works and trying to save that website then view the saved webpage in a separate tab (allowing easy comparison of the actual web page as pulled over http to the saved copy) beautifully illustrates the issue. Thanks.

I was able to reproduce this bug in Nightly 16.0a1(2012-06-14) using Windows 7(x86_64). The fault is in the way the page is saved as the locally saved web page fails to be correctly displayed in any other browsers.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:16.0) Gecko/16.0 Firefox/16.0a1 (20120614075912)

This issue seems to reproduce on multiple OSs.

As Ross said in comment 7, the page is not saved right. When opening the local copy, it's displayed wrong in all browsers.

I have the same problem (using Firefox 13.0.1). I'll be attaching the following:
1.ActualWebpage.tiff
A screenshot of www.caseypeters.us

2.SavedbyFirefox,ViewedbyFirefox.tiff
A screenshot of that page after I save it (Web page, complete), and then try to view the saved page.

3.SavedbySafari,ViewedbySafari.tiff
A similar screenshot, this time of Safari, after I save the page in Safari and then view the saved page in Safari.

Firefox.zip
The Home.html and Home.files created by Firefox when I had it save the page.

Safari.zip
The Home.webarchive file created by Safari when I had it save the page.

Marking this as Resolved > Worksforme since the issue no longer is reproducible on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 95.0a1 (2021-11-1), beta 94.0 or release 93.0 on Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04. The saved webpages are displayed as the original.
If anyone can still reproduce the issue either re-open it or file a new one.
