In spite of having "private settings > offline website" and "... > cache" checked (none other) to purge pages at FF signoff, the cache pages sometimes are not purged. The only installed add-ons are .NET Framework Asst., google toolbar and Java quick starter. 

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Normal FF use, usually alone.
2. Normal shutdown of FF (not system).



Expected Results:  
Normal shutdown, but cache pages (per MS disk cleanup) is still present. This does not happen when IE7 is used in lieu of FF. IE caching always clears successfully.

Purged web page cache at FF shutdown.

If you type about:cache in your location bar and you choose Tools > Clear Private Data > Clear Private Data and then reload the page, what do you see?

After doing that and immediately running Disk Cleanup I show 3.7 MB of temporary internet files. Those files (the same cache subdir. -- C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 -- set at install. for both IE and FF) are not removed by your process.

Strangely, opening/closing IE7 (with FF open) also does not remove the cache files as it normally will do.

...sorry. My IE7 "remove files..." option had been reset (why, I don't know). Setting it again now removes the temporary Internet files if I open/close IE7.

But...FF does not remove those files when closed. That is still the issue.

Firefox does not share the cache with IE. You can find Firefox's cache by going to the address in about:cache and delete it physically after closing your browser (right click > Delete).

OK, I checked the FF cache and all files are removed when I close FF -- sorry.

But when I installed FF I believe the procedure asked me where I wanted the cache, and I thought I specified the same subdir. as IE7. 

But perhaps not. If I had the choice (custom install, for example) I would like to do that for "good housekeeping" reasons. That lets MS "disk cleanup" find and purge those files, which it cannot do in the default FF subdir. 

But I'm a neat freak and I like to know where things are. ;)

Well, you can put the cache folder where ever you want: type in your locationbar about:config , confirm the dialog and right click somewhere in the page and choose New > string. In the first dialog you paste browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and in the second the exact path to the location you choose for your cache folder, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop

I think it asked for the installation directory. You can reinstall Firefox wherever you want, first make a Firefox folder on the desired location (e.g. your desktop), then run the installer and browse with the "Custom install" option to this folder. I think it would be best to leave the first Firefox installation where it is, and not to try to uninstall it.
