User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090729 Firefox/3.5.2 Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.23 (20090812) http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1436325&p=7320415 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=512043 Somebody reported in the Mozillazine forums that the Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 update caused Thunderbird if run under NT 4.0 to return "Could not initialize the browser's security component. The most likely cause is with files in your browsers profile directory. [...]" when it started up. Another user who has the same problem found a bug report on the problem where somebody supposedly speaking for the NSS team stated: "Windows NT 4.0 is no longer a "Tier 1" platform. That means that ensuring that NSS works on it is no longer something we test before making a release. We decommitted support for it at the same time as Win 9x and Win ME." If NT 4.0 is not supported it should be dropped from the list of supported operating systems at http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/system-requirements/ that is pointed to by the release notes. If NT 4.0 is still supported, the NSS team should support it too. Reproducible: Always

> somebody supposedly speaking for the NSS team stated: That somebody was me. I'm a co-owner of the "security" (NSS) module. See http://www.mozilla.org/owners.html#security I agree that the Mozilla projects should largely be in agreement about whether NT 4.0 is supported. It's way late now, though.

Uh, 2.0.0.X is the 1.8.1 branch (where nt and winXX are supported).

I see, so the problem occurred when someone took code for NSS from the 1.9.1 branch back to the 1.8.1 branch.

iirc you were one of the voices urging us (me) to take the fixes by upgrading the 1.8 branch to NSS 3.12.3 rather than try to backport individual patches into an unsupported custom NSS 3.11 variant. Probably the right call overall, but I don't understand why you sound like you were unaware of it.

The part of which I was unaware was that the 1.8 branch still claimed to support Win9x and NT4.0. Had I known that, that would have changed my recommendation for the 1.8 branch.

I guess there's no point in resurrecting this now.

This is relating to TB 2.x which is no longer supported. I don't think there's anything sensible/outstanding to do here.
