In the first hour, Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 has quit unexpectedly three times, twice on one machine and once on the other. All occurrences were when an attachment was being saved or opened. Thunderbird has never quit unexpectedly before on either machine. So there is definitely an issue here with Snow Leopard and 2.0.0.23.

Reproducible: Always

Robert can you provide CrashIDs ?

I'm just the messenger, this is the person who reported in the thread

http://forums.mozillazine.org/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=706265

You could PM him for more info. I'm holding off installing Snow Leopard until all my app's work.
I have same behavior here but with TB3 (3.0b3).
Should i open a new entry?

We already have bug 513745 for b3, could you post your crash IDs ( see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad for figuring out these ) there. With the crash Ids we would be able to figure out if the crash are different or not.

I do want to keep separate bugs for 2.X and 3.X series as the underlying code as changed quite a lot.

I'm posting to the thread to get more information for this particular bug.
I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and notice no problems while installing and using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23.

No, he can't, because the crash reporter in Thunderbird 2 does not run on Intel and Snow Leopard *only* runs on Intel.
Can you guys attach the Apple's crash reporters logs here please ?
Just downloaded TB 2.0.0.23 with upgraded Snow Leopard 10.6.1: TB still will not load.
I've had experience with others using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 successfully with Snow Leopard - even when initially starting up or downloading / saving attachments.
I am indeed successfully using 2.0.0.23 with SL, and haven't had a single crash. But upon launch, no keyboard commands work at all, and the main window looks "half active", meaning that the top window bar is dark grey as if the window were active (and it goes to light grey when TB doesn't have focus), but the three top left buttons (the "traffic lights") are always inactive.

I have tried reinstalling from a freshly downloaded copy, without effect. But if you minimize the window once (Cmd-H) and get it back, the window states return to normal and all keystrokes work.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's got to do with the input managers' changes in 10.6, but I am not a programmer, I only play one at work.
Sorry, typo - I meant minimizing (Cmd-M), not Cmd-H.
I have a clean install of os x 10.6 on my mac and have two reproducible problems with tb 2.0.0.23 at hand:

1. the responsiveness to clicks on the triangles the expanding and collapsing mail accounts and folders within is erratic. Sometimes expanding/collapsing works, sometimes not. Furthermore, a triangle may change color (gray/black) when clicking on another triangle.

2. when creating mail accounts, after whenever I provoke a message (like 'Please provide a valid host name) and click OK, the wizzard window does not paint correctly any more.

I have 10.6.2 and TB 2.0.0.23 crashes way too often. Sometimes by just clicking on a message. I tried to disable all the add-ons and themes, but that doesn't resolve the issue. Running TB in safe mode does not help. TB Crash in safe mode message: "Critical failure: the LastResort font is unavailable."
I assume we aren't getting talkback reports, so setting blocking bug 482756
Summary: Thunderbird crashing on Snow Leopard → Thunderbird crashing on Snow Leopard [v2 / TB2]
Whiteboard: [gs]
Talkback reports won't appear ever on 10.6.2 since Talkback is PPC only and 10.6 is Intel only.

I don't think the dependency you set is needed, since this report is about Thunderbird 2 not Thunderbird 3 and the entire crash reporting infrastructure changed in that time.
what's next?

The *only* crash issue I'm finding in open bugs for snow leopard/10.6 is
Bug 524996 - Crash when using 'Save As' [@ aeDispatchAppleEvent]

If that's not the same issue as yours, then perhaps this isn't specific to snow leopard? I would cast a wider net to find other reported bugs about attachments

summary will be _much_ better if it mentions attachments - summaries should be a micro description of how the issue is triggered

thanks. didn't realize that.

quite right. however, i've decided to play a little loose with the original purpose and definition of bug 482756.
Summary: Thunderbird crashing on Snow Leopard [v2 / TB2] → Thunderbird crashing on Snow Leopard opening, deleting or using attachments [v2 / TB2]
We're nearing time to close this because
* we have no stacks on which to act, and
* even if we did, version 2 isn't receiving any more fixes

But I'd like to hear from you - it looks like there's 4 of you here - about whether you do OR do not seen this crash when using v3.0 or v3.1
I have no issues with TB 3.x on Snow Leopard.
Thanks Robert. closing WFM per comment 19

also closing gsfn topic. v2 is unsupported, and the best way forward is to report new bugs against version 3.1
