Because of bug 515301 messages are marked as read when you enter a folder which messages were automatically deleted by retention policy.

Is there a way to delete messages selected by retention policy manually? Is it possible to implement retention policy deletion when user exit Thunderbird and not on every entering the folder?

Reproducible: Always

yes, the retention policy should be applied even if the folder is not manually visited

my situation being folders with RSS feed items.
I used the folder view unread most of the time.
Thus for RSS feeds without any new post, the folder won't be visited and "expired" message just stays there.
Severity: normal → S3
