It would be nice if Firefox changed the background colour for characters in the hostname which do not match the character set of the first character of the hostname.

For example:
iгѕ.com uses cyrillic for the second letter. It is different from the character set for the first character and so would be highlighted.

Reproducible: Always
See discussion in bug 279099. Color isn't used yet, probably because it won't work for visually impaired users.

Bug 316727 will help in identifying mixed script cases, whatever the notification will be (it's currently puny code I think)
Why do I have 3 inches of Asian characters next to my Firefox logo? After opening a variety of web pages, the information to the right of my Firefox logo in the title line ABOVE the Tool Bar and Address Bar, instead of seeing the English description of the page, there were over 3 inches of Asian characters. Reloading made it go away and work correctly again.
Bonnie: that has nothing to do with this bug.
