529770 - selecting all messages in a folder lists all conversations in message pane

I'm using build 2 of Thunderbird 3.0RC1. I like to read my mail using the message pane (F8). I was reading a message and decided to remove the tags for all of the messages in the folder. I selected all of the messages and the message I was reading was suddenly replaced by a list of 92 conversations, with an archive and delete button in the upper right corner of the message pane.

No real harm done but its very surprising. I don't have any conversations. There were 93 messages in the folder but I have "view -> sort by -> unthreaded" and none of them have In-Reply-To, References, or Supersedes headers. I have one message with a Thread-Topic and Thread-Index header.
I assume it treats any message with a Message-ID as a conversation. T

This problem seems to occur in any folder. How can I disable this feature?

set mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads to false.

This happens when more than one message or a collapsed thread is selected.
