I think we talked about this in Prague, not sure if you tested this.

The microsummary for a bug query just returns "Bug List (513)", which is speedier than the full query.
We did talk about it, although I couldn't figure out how to do it. 

But in fact, I'm currently working on a bug count API call that will give you single value, 1D, 2D and 3D tables of data, based on report.cgi on the back-end. Once it's working, i'll change the count=1 code to use it on the back end (and deprecate count=1 too). So this should make things much, much, much faster.
