Firefox's awesome bar have accesskey to focus it (Ctrl+L)
Thunderbird's global search bar (thunderbar) should also have it to make search easier/faster.
Ctrl-k does the focus ? can you describe a bit more when you are trying to get the focus with the keyboard and it does not work ?
Oops, not sure why I couldn't but Ctrl+K works fine now. Thanks.
