In the message list, a space is missing in the subject where it's shown in the e-mail itself.

Ok, I just looked at the source, it's actually a return that's not shown as a space.

Here's the actual subject:

Yes, it still occurs in safe mode.

Data of Subject: header is as follows:
({LF}==0x0A, {CRLF}==0x0D0A, {CR}==0x0D, {HTAB}==0x90, of ascii)

{HTAB} is removed by quirks?
(AFAIK, if no quirks, the {HTAB} was displayed as U+FFFD at Thread pane by Tb....)
If so, when the quirks was landed? By which bug? Or by extension?
The attached file named sample_email.txt is mime-type=text/plain.

What byte-code(of ascii) do you mean by the "Return" in your bug summary?
AFAIK, {HTAB}==0x09 was/had beeen/is never called "Return"...

Problem with HTAB in subject is bug 460443.

Do you use LiGothic or Heiti TC for UI font or font for mail display?
If yes, it may be similar issue to bug 532346. See also bug 530419, bug 532349.
