When I hit 'delete' on KB a COPY goes into the deleted folder but the original remains in the inbox. If I then try to delete any messages using KB, button in TB or Right click menu no originals are removed and copies go to deleted folder. If I hit the delete key 6 times I get 6 copies in the deleted folder. If I go to the 'file' menu and empty deleted, the folder is emptied, but the original email is still in the inbox.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.click on email
2.press 'delete' button on keyboard
3.try any delete method
Actual Results:  
copy of email goes into the deleted folder but the original stays

Expected Results:  
email goes into deleted folder leaving no copy behind

tried normal folders, same issue, normally use smart folders. I have tried closing TB and re-opening but problem remains. It does eventually reset itself and then I can delete messages SO LONG as I don't use the 'delete' on the keyboard. I can't find the 'trigger' for TB resetting itself back to normal. Keyboard is Microsoft comfort curve 2000.  Didn't have this problem before upgrading to V3.0.

* Does it happen in -safe-mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode) ?
* do you have any error messages in Tools -> Error console when you reproduce the issue ?
* Are you using imap ?

Still couldn't delete a message after those warning came in. just went back and like before was able to delete it. I have disabled all add-ons in TB

You can safely ignore all the messages in comment #3.

Can you explain a bit more what this went back action is ?

One thing you can do and that might help : on the folder where the issue occurs :
 rigth click, select properties and click rebuild.

You might also want to compact that folder before doing the rebuild.

I have Vista Ultimate and since the latest version of Thunderbird by keyboard delete key has stopped working entirely. It seems that I cannot delete with the key but can drag and drop into deleted. 

I do not get a copy of the deleted message in the deleted folder when using the delete key.  The message just stays in the inbox until I use another method of deleting it.

Was a little confused as to what "schredder" was and so have not installed that to be able to test the nightly build. Not so clear documentation on that.

I get a similar result when clicking the delete "X" in the menu bar.  Occasionally, random emails refuse to be deleted.  If I restart Thunderbird, it doesn't fix the problem.  Also, I get random, occasional, "out-of-memory" errors when automatic downloading of new emails occurs.  These quirks have only appeared recently in version 3.6.12.

Followup to previous comment:
I noticed that on emailed that can't be deleted, if I come back to them 5 or 10 minutes later, many of them can then be deleted.  It's like the file is being locked or something, and later releases.

I confirmed that the problem is with version 3.1.6 only ... I re-installed version 3.1.5 and the problem went away.

Final update:
Even though the problem appeared to get better with version 3.1.5, the actual cause now appears to be the "Livedrive" online backup service.  The backup service seemed to be locking some of the files so Thunderbird couldn't delete them.  I removed the backup service and Thunderbird (including version 3.1.6) no longer has a problem with deleting emails.
