I have just tried the newest version of Thunderbird (3.0)
Seemed to be interesting, but I preferred to rollback to the previous version that I had (2.0.22) because of some extensions as Contacts Sidebar that do not work yet in 3.0. This Request of feature suggests you to implement the contacts panel (below the mail folders) with the option to be shown or not.
For the ones that don't know, Contacts Sidebar extension implements a Panel with all your contacts below the mail folders, (as Microsoft e-mail programs do) and I find it very useful because when you double-click the contact (name), a new Compose Window comes with that contact e-mail address filled in the "to:" field, making it easier and faster to write to your contacts.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. There is no conctacts panel
2. in thunderbird
3. without extension
Actual Results:
There is no conctacts panel in thunderbird without extension

Expected Results:
A panel with contacts would make it easier to manage contacts and write to them.
Severity: normal → S3
