User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 YFF35 Firefox/3.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: 3.0.3

I leave Thunderbird on all the time. When I try to delete a mail message the "delete" button does not delete the mail. Other buttons and functions continue to work. The fix is to close and restart Thunderbird at which time it deletes mail. The delete function continues to operate while I am actively using Thunderbird but after leaving the program for a period of time and returning to check mail the problem re-occurs.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Let Thunderbird sit for some time
2.Select mail item
3.Hit the "delete" button in mail view pane
Actual Results:
Mail is not deleted

Expected Results:
Deleted the mail
What kind of folders are you trying to delete from : imap, local folders ?

Have you tried safe mode? (see https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode for more information)

Anything in Tools -> Error console ?

Do you have the empty trash on exit ?

Can you explain the mail is not deleted ? - It's not moved to the trash, it's not marked as deleted ? or is it moved to trash but the trash doesn't get emptied ?
In response to your questions:
I have both Pop and Imap email and it does not matter which folder I am trying to delete from, both types of email generate the same problem.
I do not have the "Empty Trash on Exit" selected.
When I select a particular email message and then select the "delete" button in the preview window pane or from a drop down menu, nothing happens. The mail is not deleted, it does not move to trash it simply stays in the view pane. It is as if the delete button/function is simply not registering as being selected. If I then close Thunderbird and restart it, the "delete" function then "deletes" the selected email message.
I will try the safe mode and provide you with my response.
I experience the same issue with not being able to delete messages. At the same time, filters quit working and messages do not get saved to the "Sent" folder.

I ran in safe mode for a week or so, no difference.

I have three accounts, two POP3, one IMAP. All are affected. I've set both of the POP3 accounts to not get messages at start up but that hasn't made any difference.

Really like Thunderbird but restarting it 10-15 times a day has gotten to be a drag!
I even tried opening Thunderbird in Rosetta but the problem exists. Like Terri I have similar issues with saving sent mail in the sent folder and I am frustrated having to continually close Thunderbird to get it to delete mail. I am now using an different mail program and if you ever get this fixed I will return to Thunderbird as I do like its other features - let me know.

What is being defined as your sent folder in Tools -> Account Settings... -> Account name -> Copies and Folders ?

When you guys delete do you see any new messages in Tools -> Error console ?

The "Sent" folder is at the default value for all three accounts. I did not change it.
> When you guys delete do you see any new messages in Tools -> Error console ?
I've run the error console but do not see a new error when things go inoperable.

This "error" comes up every time I start Thunderbird:
Error: Exception in Item event - calling onFolderSelected: TypeError: selectedFolders is undefined
Source File: chrome://quickfolders/content/quickfolders.js
Line: 1095

These are new messages today:
QuickFolders:QF.init() - QuickFolders Version 1.8.8
Running on Thunderbird Version 3.0.4

The next two are listed twice:
10.0.0.12 : potentially vulnerable to CVE-2009-3555
2010-04-01 08:39:11	gloda.datastore	ERROR	got error in _asyncTrackerListener.handleError(): 19: PRIMARY KEY must be unique
I can confirm that my settings are similar to those reported by Terri. Most "sent" folders are the default although for one or two accounts it is set as being the "sent" folder for the particular account. The failure to delete messages occurs both at first start up of Thunderbird but also after it "sits" for a period of time. Restarting generally corrects the problem but we should not have to restart Thunderbird.
Same problem here with the German version:
When I start thunderbird (version3.1.4), it all it works fine. But after a few clicks, I cannot delete mails anymore. Instead, thunderbird marks these mails as read. In addition, when I send an email, I get a popup that the mail was sent correctly, but that thunderbird cannot copy the sent mail into the sent folder.
I tried to use thunderbird in "safe mode" - same problem.
Guys can you try removing the global-messages-db.sqlite from your profiles and see if that corrects the issue ( this will retrigger a indexation of your mail stores) ?
This seems to have fixed the problem! I haven't had to restart once since making the change three days ago -- down from multiple restarts every day.

Fabulous!

I deleted the global-messages-db.sqlite but there is no influence on the problem. It works for while when I start thunderbird, but after a while messages that I try to delete are only marked as read. Besides, after failing to delete mails, a peculiar thing happens: When I want to go to another mail within the same folder, there is no reaction. I need to go to another mail ACCOUNT and then go back to be able to read other mails in the account where mails could not be deleted

Winfried does using thunderbird in safemode helps ?
I tried Thunderbird in safemode, but it does not make any difference.

If I remember correctly, the problem started after I got an Apple MobileMe account (IMAP). Other e-mail addresses I use work with pop3 except for one which had not caused any problem before. Unfortunately, the failure to delete mails and to copy sent mails into the sent folder affects both, IMAP and pop3.
The PC where the problem occurs runs with Vista Ultimate 64. The other PC in my office runs with Windows XP and Thunderbird does not cause any problem there. The MobileMe account is also used on a MacBook Pro with the Apple Mail program, but only occasionally.
When this happens, does the Trash folder have it's special icon? Does the message delete if you leave the folder and click back in the folder?
During the past months, I used my MAC most of the time and the problem didn't occur with the MAC. Besides, I changed all my accouts to IMAP, thus it didn't bother me on the Vista PC any more. Lately, I used the Vista PC again with TB 6.02 and the problem has not occurred any more. No idea what happened, but the problem doesn't bother me any more.
Thanks for the discussion and the attempts to help.
Best regards from Germany,

Winfried
