i would usually delete email by large groups and use the control key.
this does not work 

thunderbird has  installed two copies of each of my mail folders

my computer is new today with win 7

reply, forward, delete are better situated to the top left and not on the right side

What exactly doesn't work? Does Thunderbird not select the emails properly? not delete them? strike them out in the message list pane instead of moving them to Trash?
(I'll assume this is your main problem, and the bug will take this for now.)

Not sure from your description, but this sounds like bug 547231 or bug 479294 (or perhaps another that I cannot now find). If it's neither of those two bugs, please file a new bug with some more details on which folders are affected, whether you upgraded from 2.0, etc. (Mozilla has a long-standing policy of using one bug report for one problem, and not grouping unrelated problems together in the same report.)

I'm pretty sure there's a bug entry or ten on this already, but can't find them at the moment. Again, can you file that separately? (It's a very different issue, and isn't strictly speaking a bug, but a design decision; you'll need to argue very carefully and thoroughly why it's wrong.)
