I had a signed XPI that I unzipped, modified, and rezipped without thinking. So now the signature was invalid. When I went to install, I got: The download of file:///Users/mkaply/Projects/BrandThunder/trunk/clients/btpersonas-1.0-flastate.xpi failed: -3 This should be a more user friendly error message.

What version of Firefox were you testing with? This should have been fixed with bug 552965

Could you check it in a current nightly, I believe that this is fixed now.
