I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now mailto: addresses do not open up Thunderbird, or any other mailer. If I start firefox from a terminal, I get no error message. Also no error message in the error console. I deleted my profile, same problem. I removed ubufox, same problem. I used preferences for mailto: to always ask, and then it asks. But if I select thunderbird, or /usr/bin/thunderbird, or anything (like xterm), nothing appears. No error message, no window.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start firefox
2. right click the page, and select send to
3.
Actual Results:
Nothing. No mailer.

Expected Results:
Starts up thunderbird mailer with a message creation window.

This is really an issue in your distribution and you should report this to your distribution instead so they include sane defaults in the browser packages that they ship.

See reports such as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/136303 or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/259255 for example.
