I use keyboard navigation a lot.  I navigate in folders using arrow keys and the Nostalgy plug-in.  I then tab into the message pane.   (Three panes visible: folders, messages, and current message)  When I try to navigate among the messages in the message pane (with the focus in the message selection pane) using the up and down arrow keys, Thunderbird will sometimes move up and down in the folder selection pane instead.  

Other times, the up and down arrow keys operate correctly (and as they did until I upgraded to 3.1.2.



Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In three-pane view
2. tab into the message selection pane from the folder selection pane
3. hit up arrow
Actual Results:  
The previous message gets selected, but the focus changes to the folder selection pane.  So if I hit up-arrow again, and I'll be in a different folder.  

Expected Results:  
stay in message selection pane, choose previous message.

The equivalent thing happens with down-arrow.  

It doesn't seem to matter whether the folder was initially selected using Nostalgy or tabs and arrow keys.  

The f and b keys can still be used to navigate within the message selection pane.

It doesn't happen in safemode.  I can only intentionally replicate the bug by using Nostalgy to get to a new folder, and then using arrow keys to navigate.  I'll report it to the Nostalgy folks.

It's now happening repeatedly in unsafe-mode, without using Nostalgy.  That is, I tab from the folder pane to the message pane, hit up-arrow, and the focus is in the folder pane.

I'll switch back to safe mode for a while and see if it happens again.

Might be a theme or another addon causing the issue.

It did not happen in Safe mode after operating for a few hours.  Back to normal, and it's getting me all the time.

So one add-ons is the culprit try to figure out which one and notify the author.
