I can download my email to TB but sends give an SMTP error. I downloaded Eudora and it works fine with sends and receives.  Server (Network solutions) tech support suggests it is TB bug since Eudora 7 works fine both up and down. The automatic config should be an option. So I am back to Eudora.  This system connects by wifi to a cradlepoint router and verizon broadband. MBoard is  Giga intel core i5, 8Gb RAM. Windows 7 pro / 64bit

Steps to Reproduce:
1.uninstall TB, reinstall
2.reset parameters
3.send fails; receive slow but OK
Actual Results:  
Gives SMPT error, asks for repeat of password, returns same error.

Expected Results:  
send of test email

I have the exact same config of TB on an older dell XP pro and upgraded to TB pro and it works just fine, exact same parameters for Server and email in.

error messages: "Login to SMTP server failed."  "The message could not be sent because the connection to the smtp server was lost in the middle of the transaction. Contact your server administrator or try again." 


Eudora, using the same settings on the same computer, works fine. TB3 also works fine on an older Dell WIN XP pro

I tried reloading TB3 and trying various port settings, etc, to no avail. With both TB3 and Eudora present on the sustem (but with only Eudora running) Eudora also refuses to send mail. I then uninstalled TB 3, ran Eudora and LO AND BEHOLD, Eudora's send works. What in the H is TB doing to my computer? (I cannot even undo everything; it retains the previous setup information in an unspecified local file location.)

I also loaded an earlier version TB2 and it does the same thing.  This is a new system. GIGA Mboard with 8Gb RAM. Pentium Core i5. Win7 Pro. Nothing unusual. When I would like to try a 100% new reinstall but I can't get rid of the TB3 paramaters that are hidden somewhere.

IT WOULD REALLY HELP IF I COULD DO A 100% removal of TB# with all its secondary files, and THEN try to install.  I can't be the only one with this problem...

I have the exact same problem.  Same smtp error message, same behavior.  Can fetch from pop3 server with no problems, but smtp fails ... it's a very quick failure ... not a timeout ... whatever is causing the "connection...was lost" ALWAYS happens within 2-3 seconds of clicking on Send command.

My problem is with server smtp.att.yahoo.com.

I downloaded latest release of EudoraOSE and invoked automigration from my working installation of Eudora 6.2.  I use a MacPro with OS X 10.4.11.  Service provider is att-yahoo.  Server names, ports, authentication, password and SSL/TSL options are exactly the same but only the classic Eudora works (as it has for years).  In EudoraOSE I've tried completely deleting the account and redefining it ... even allowing auto configuration to autoconfigure port settings - which it does according to recomendations from att-yahoo email help.  I've also tried by configuring manually.  Nothing seems to help.

One thing that is true is  the email address I specify  in the FROM header is [e-mail] ... a domain hosted by networksolutions.  (Not att-yahoo, the ISP that hosts the pop3 and smtp servers for the account).  This is the same setup that I've used with classic Eudora and its worked fine for years.

Interestingly, I have two other accounts which both have an email address whose domain is hosted by the same ISP that hosts the pop3/smtp servers, and EudoraOSE has no trouble sending (or receiving) via these servers.

Could the att-yahoo smtp server be viewing this as a relay ... and for some reason Thunderbird/EudoraOSE doesn't handle this case the same way that classic Eudora does?

I'd be interested to know if W RUBINK also uses a FROM address pointing to an inbox that's not served directly by the designated smtp server.

There is another possibility that needs to be considered.  After I did the migration from classic to OSE, I did run classic Eudora again to look at the server configuration parameters.  I understand that this runs the risk of mucking up files also used, and possibly having been modifed by, OSE.  Again, it would be interesting to know whether or not W RUBINK also ran the old version of Eudora after installing and migrating to the new.

After reading more carefully, I see that W Rubink was having problems on windows platform running TB.  He falls back to Eudora 7 for windows in order to work.

I have same problem on Mac Tiger platform (10.4.11) while running EudoraOSE and I fall back to Eudora 6.2 for Mac in order to work.

Seems likely that problem is in TB code shared by EudoraOSE so I reported here instead of Penelope bugzilla.

I am SOOO fed up with both Thunderbird and Eudora on Win7-64bit that I am soon going to throw in the towel and suck up to microsoft. What if the hell has happened to what used to be super products?

My problem has been solved.  I had misconfigured my smtp settings with the wrong password.  I tried changing it carefully, but screwed up (unknowingly) and that led to the false conclusion that subsequent test failures were NOT due to bad password.

A kind expert on the Penelope forum (for EudoraOSE) showed me how to inspect passwords (Preferences/Security/Password) and this revealed my problem.

If you have not tried this yet, it's worth looking at ... although I guess you are using a TB UI, so the method for inspecting server passwords may be different.

The expert who helped me pointed out that the a likely reason this report is still unconfirmed is that, although you spec'd your platforum/network details carefully, you did not specify the smtp server, port and other related settings that would allow someone to investigate your report independently.

He also pointed out the my ISP (att-yahoo) was so popular that if this were a bug (as opposed to a configuration problem) it stands to reason there'd be a lot more squawking about it here ... (unless the TB version you are using (and the "bug") is super recent).  Network solutions servers are also popular, so again the same argument applies.

I hope you solve your problem and can come to trust the new TB/Eudora which, unlike it's classic antecedents, is intended to adapt to evolving internet practices and standards.
