This is a crazy idea I just had, to avoid the need for things like <http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/9f775e8f5852>. Maybe this isn't feasible; in that case please just WONFIX it.
It's not hard to build. Might be a problem for other reasons?
shouldn't we just update the .hgignore for the repo's this matters?  I'd rather do that than block any possible legit uses of those constructs in filenames. [though I cant' think of a legit use atm]
Adding them to .hgignore would just mask the problem. There's no point in worrying about theoretical legitimate uses that no one can think of, but there also isn't really any point in worrying about this issue much since it's only happened once and wasn't a big deal, so I think WONTFIX :)

It happened more than once, the most recent occurrence being 883cd6be06d2, and there are some mercurial repositories (I've seen that in l10n) which are littered with .orig files.
