the collector in the 1.7.x series (and likely every prior series) has had a problem with logging.  With rotating log files and several competing processes using them, the logs get truncated, fragmented and are basically useless.

Solution: backport the syslog feature from 1.8 into the collector.  This will resolve the issue.
