When you use mass storage mode, the phone unmounts the sd card so the computer can mount it. Naturally, we can't download anything if the file system isn't there.
On the Motorola Droid, the default browser there gives a prompt with the text:
"
SD card unavailable
The SD card is busy. To allow downloads, select "Turn off USB storage" in the notification.
[OK]
"
Madhava, do you want to have an error message for this?

We should probably mimic the built in browser here
I'm presuming this should take care of the case where there is no SD card present, period, which I assume is the underlying cause of bug 610383.

I also can not get an update notification to the last nightly build if the device is connected through the USB cable to the PC in USB Mass Storage Mode.

Should we increase the severity of this bug to "major" taking into account that many users might actually charge their phones when they want to download something or to update an application?
I have a patch for this in bug 613590. Just need to do some investigating. Marking this a dup since there's some WIP there.
