The Linux test infrastructure runs on the fedora 12 Operating System. Fedora 12 will be end-of-life/end-of-support as of 2010-12-02.

I suggest upgrading to fedora 14.
We are not going to be switching now.
Maybe after Firefox 4 and/or next time we get a new order of testing slaves.

For now I suggest this INVALID (as we are not going to do it now) rather than WONTFIX as I assume we would like to upgrade when the right time comes.

Sounds OK?
Bill, it would be a huge project to switch the version of fedora that we use. We will probably upgrade next time we get new hardware. As we do minimal updates to our test machines, this EOL shouldn't have much effect on us.

Thanks very much for bring it to our attention though, its always great to get an extra set of eyes :D

I don't think resolving this as either INVALID or WONTFIX is the correct thing to do here. I understand completely that this is a big project. It was my intention in opening this bug to get such a project started (or at least being thought about). I suspect the problem is that I filed this against the wrong product/component. Please reassign this to the correct product/component rather than resolving it when it is obviously NOT resolved.

It is my understanding that the whole point of running tests on fedora 12 was to have the tests run against a Linux version that was representative of what real world users would be using. I don't thing a completely unsupported OS fits that need.

Upgrading the OS upon which we run our tests is a massive undertaking that we will not be doing whenever an OS is desupported. This is the correct component for the bug and WONTFIX is the correct resolution.

Well we already have bug 589546 wherein we cannot properly test graphics acceleration under Linux Using software acceleration without causing crashes under fedora 12 which is NOT an issue under fedora 14. So, we have a either we need to turn on acceleration under Linux with no real way to do a test, or never do graphics acceleration under Linux.

This is a real issue.

It does not mater if it is hard or not.

In actuality, I would venture to say that the enormity of the undertaking is NEVER a valid reason to mark a bug a WONTFIX.

when we are getting valid, stable performance numbers and reliable unit tests, it is very large risk in the end game of a major release cycle.

We have thought about it and for the time being, we aren't going to do this.

This would be the correct component. It is resolved.

The whole point of running tests on Fedora 12 is to get useful, stable, performance testing and regression testing on a modern desktop linux operating system.

To make sure that I understand what you are saying correctly, have you compared Fedora 12 and Fedora 14 running on the Mac Mini generation that uses a GeForce 9300M video chip? I am also unsure why, when you have a workaround (589546 comment 70) that solves the problem, changing the os on our test slaves which do not exhibit this problem is needed.

To counter your experience, I have a system that has worked 100% reliably with general system level graphics acceleration on Fedora 8-13. This same machine is not able to run either the Nvidia proprietary or Nouveau driver with any stability with or without graphics acceleration.

It is not a question of hard or not. Changing the goal post shortly before the release of a major version of Firefox could be very damaging to the development process. WONTFIX does not mean that a request is invalid. If it were invalid, it would have been closed as INVALID. What this means is that we have decided that under the current circumstances, this bug wouldn't further the goals of the project and we don't have the resources to fix it.

Er, I didn't mean to clear the resolution. No idea how that happened!

I was trying to argue that this should maybe be targeted for future rather than WONTFIX. But then I noticed that in comment 0, I was kind of specific about fedora 14 as the upgrade path.

I have since looked at the fedora roadmap and it seems it really makes sense to wait until fedora 15 to do this as, unless it slips form the feature list, is supposed to include the ability to draw int he titlebar, a feature that is definitely wanted.

I will file a new bug after fedora 15 is released.
