https://www.42registry.org/ .42 is a new independent top-level domain. Although it's rather unofficial (not recognized by ICANN), its well-defined purpose as the TLD for free software and free knowledge makes it relevant to us and to the most 'core' part of our audience. Moreover, registering a domain is currently free of charge, and is expected to stay very cheap (5 euro / year). I believe we should register mozilla.42 and redirect it to mozilla.org. Same for firefox.42, etc.

(I'm being told that registering .42 domains will remain entirely free of charge and that the 5 euro/year is just a suggested donation.)

What's the value to registering these domains right now? It's incredibly unlikely that any production services will move to a .42 domain since it's largely unresolvable to nearly all end users and not the direction Mozilla's going with the naming to mozilla.org (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Websites/Taskforce/Proposals/Domain_Name_Strategy).

Should also mention that Windows users won't ever be able to resolve numeric TLDs unless they are skilled enough to patch their registry (or MSFT changes the default behavior for some future version of Windows).

Right now, it's mostly about the coolness factor. The .42 tld makes a statement, both explicitly (it's only for free software/culture) and implicitly (decentralized internet). I was initially also concerned about preventing these domains from getting squatted, but the guys running 42registry seem to be serious about that, they reject such applications.
