this may be related to Bug 531397, but in general i think it's a different path.  at least on tab selection the reload should be initiated, which seems the normal operation on a tab change.

STR:
1. select a message #1 in 3pane.
2. open a different message #2 in a tab, go back to 3pane.
3. change layout.
4. 3pane will show message #1.
5. select the tabbed message.  it will show the message #2 title, but will display the message #1 selected in 3pane.

i believe for all account types.  the STR are pretty clear..
