Mail notification (when working with POP anyway) at the bottom-left of the window doesn't seem to work unless you open mail, and check for new messages first. From then on out it will work, until the next time you start Mozilla up, then you have to open up and check for new mail all over again.

no, even with my fix I still see this. this should probably go to gayatrib, who owns biff.

this is actually one of the things we have to work on for an upcoming release as part of improving biff.

Does the check new mail on startup pref take care of this? The user now no longer has to do Get Messages themselves.

Yes, We perform biff on all those accounts with 'check for new mail at startup' turned on when messenger is launched. But, we haven't implemented the piece that updates the biff icon on navigator window without user having to launch the messenger application.

As we have functionality to perform biff at startup via pref ('check new mail at startup') wihtout having to click on Get Msg, I am marking this bug fixed. For the case where we would like to update the browser window's toolbox mail icon with biff when new mail arrives wihtout haivng to start the messenger application, I filed a separate bug i.e, bug 71105. So, for any given account, if you want new mail indication to happen without having to click on GetMsg, turn pref 'Check new mail at startup' on for that account from the Server Settings panel.

Is the new pref turned on or off by default? It seems like it must be turned on in order to consider this finished.

It's turned 'on' by default for the default account (i.e., the first account created).

This bug still isn't fixed. You still have to open mail before the biff icon changes. Granted, you don't have to hit "Get Msg", but just starting the browser will not update the biff icon if you have new mail. That was the whole point of this bug...
