User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0.1
Build ID: 20110707182747

Steps to reproduce:

Our office recently upgraded from 2.0.0.24 to 5.0. A user who uses the address book quite extensively reports this problem which I have been able to reproduce.

Actual results:

When he tries to send a message to a mailing list that contains other mailing lists an error is displayed BUT (I just found out) the email is 'sometimes' sent to all intended recipients. Below is the error from my reproduced test of his problem:

An error occurred while sending mail. The server responded: 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: "testlist(tertiary)". Please check the message recipient "testlist(tertiary)" and try again.

This is what I did to reproduce the problem:

Open Address Book
Highlight Personal Address Book
Right click --> new list
List name/nickname/description is: test list (main)
type a valid email address in the addresses area
click OK

Highlight Personal Address Book
Right click --> new list
List name/nickname/description is: test list (secondary)
type a valid email address in the addresses area
click OK

Highlight Personal Address Book
Right click --> new list
List name/nickname/description is: test list (tertiary)
type a valid email address in the addresses area
click OK

Double click on 'test list (main)'
add 'test list (secondary)' in the address area
add 'test list (tertiary)' in the address area
click OK

close address book

In the main thunderbird window, click the 'write' tab.
In the 'to' section type test list and select 'test list (main)' from the drop down.
type "test test test" in subject line
type "test test test" in body
click the send button

Expected results:

Send email to all valid emails in all mailing lists via a master mailing list.

Evidently, this worked before the upgrade to 5.0.
Severity: normal → major
Does this also happens in safemode (see http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe-Mode) ?

Anything in Tools -> Error console when this happens ?

I had my user send a message to his mailing list. This is the text from the 'Error console':

<our mail server> : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555

It appears to me that Thunderbird is not parsing through the local mailing lists for email addresses. It seems that Thunderbird is simply sending the name of the 'local' mailing lists to the server. The sever doesn't recognize the mailing list (because it is local to my user's machine) and errors out.

Thunderbird should parse through all sub level local mailing lists for email addresses first before sending to the server.

Here is an example of how he is set up (worked in 2.0.0.24):

Mailing List (top level):
  -- Mailing List 1
  -- Mailing List 2
  -- valid email address 1
  -- valid email address 2

Mailing List 1:
  -- valid email addresses

Mailing List 2:
  -- valid email addresses

As soon as I can gain access to his machine again, I'll put it in safe mode and report back.
OK ... my user finally reported back and we were able to start up Thunderbird in safe mode.

He composed a message to his list that contains emails and about 6 other local lists. He sent the mail and a dialog popped up with this message:

An error occurred while sending mail. The server responded: 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: "emsregion1ala". Please check the message recipient "emsregion1ala" and try again.

In the Error console the following message occurred 6 times (I suspect one for each of his local lists) (I've obscured the name of our mail server):

<our mail server> : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555
