Steps to reproduce:

(1) Disable message pane under view -> layout
(2) Under the two scenarios I've found so far, the message pane unwantedly reappears :

a/ Unexpected application crash.  Upon reopening, the message pane reappears.
b/ Going to Preferences -> Download more dictionaries.  Makes the message pane reappear.
please try version 6 and report results.
