I hear it makes tests faster.  Yes please.
Fixed!  It needed mostly minor tweaks like making sure the super for setUpClass() was called and/or moving some non-DB stuff back to setUp():

I gave up on the failing Sphinx tests though.

jbalogh says they're going away so we should be fine.  There are some smoke tests left.
