Automation does not track what version of https://hg.mozilla.org/build/tools to use, so changes in command-line usage can break Thunderbird because we don't yet have the latest buildbotcustom code from upstream.
John, just as an FYI you can config the system to use a separate tools repo.

This is what SeaMonkey is doing atm, and maintaining a fork of the build/tools repo.
Thunderbird now has the same build servers and repositories as Firefox, so changes to build/tools shouldn't affect us any longer.
