This is interesting, it's hard to say if this is because of a bug in windows or not.

I can confirm with HA enabled (GTX560Ti). Firefox 7 beta + Win 8 DP.
Confirming, all sorts of graphical glitches occur in the browser chrome (tabs/titlebar buttons/toolbar buttons/etc) with hardware acceleration enabled in Windows 8 Developer Preview (latest UX Nightly, Nvidia GT230).
Comment 6•13 years ago

||
Confirming, Bug 687253 is a similar one, although on the latest firefox nightly
Ok, so: D2D with layers = glitches D2D without layers = glitches Layers alone (D3D9) = no glitches disabling azure makes no difference

This may sound dumb, but have you installed the official nvidia drivers(280.27), because I think the driver number you provided (8.17.12.8527 ) means that you have the default microsoft driver, which performs really badly in games.
I, personally, installed the Nvidia drivers, but they do not fix this bug.

I can also confirm this happening on 2 of my machines running Firefox 7.0.1 and Thunderbird 7.0.1 running the latest Nvidia drivers. These graphical glitches only seem to happen on Mozilla products, haven't seen it on any other application. This bug should be confirmed.
Summary: GFX glitches on windows 8 (with D2D and layers) → GFX glitches on windows 8 (with D2D)

Confirming. Nightly running on Windows 8 build 8102 with nVidia drivers 285.38. Firefox is the only application having trouble. In addition, it seems to have something to do with image decoding, as images from content will sometimes leak into the chrome, as well as sometimes disappear in content as well (though that may also be a different problem).

Yup, I'm seeing the same thing with Firefox 7.0.1.

Same issues here with Firefox 9 beta with the Win8 8102 build on an Inspiron laptop with a Core2Duo and GeForce 8400M GS video.

Still seeing this on the "Consumer Preview". Haven't installed a more recent driver yet though, but I'm sure that won't change anything. It comes with 270.45.

A colleague has an ATI card, and doesn't exhibit this behavior. Seems like it might be an NVidia issue? I did a quick scan through the comments of both bugs mentioning this and saw all GFXs were Nvidia... Can confirm. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560, driver version 8.17.12.9573 (latest I think) Glitches in Firefox button and tab bar (wrong colors, stray pixels, fragments of page graphics - sometimes it's quite hard to tell which tab ist the active one as several tabs show the "active" color) AND SOMETIMES IN PAGE CONTENT, e.g. YouTube, start page (logged in), left bar (with abos and suggested abos). Most of the glitches can be temporarily fixed by switching window mode (windowed-maximized) for a few seconds and then switching back, my guess is that some kind of visual buffer gets emptied then and when freshly redrawn, the components have no glitches. For probably the same reason, hovering the Firefox button will always correct its color; most times this also helps with tabs and page content.

yep, same here. however, ENABLING d2d does not start the corruption until firefox restarts (but I guess that's because firefox doesn't actually enable when you tick the checkbox)

Same here with Win 8 Consumer Preview 8250 64bit german. "Glitches" on FF 11 and nightly 14.xxx! I think it's between Nvidia and Win8. Just guessing. IE 10 64bit runs fine. Other browser not tested yet. Great, i'm not alone! ^^

What i had guess! In my psoting #35 i also guess it and now after some days using Win8 and playin' some actual games on Acer Aspire 6920G (Nvidia Grafics 9500m) i see minimum 50% less graficpower than on win7. Even so on Windows Media Center watching TV: Also here it's so called "Tearing" to see. Posting a message to nvidia last days is w/o response. Maybe we should all write an email to nvidia!

This looks like an nvidia driver bug, so it looks like for now, we should blocklist hw accel on win8+nvidia.
Comment 44•12 years ago
|
||
I tested that H/W acceleration WORKS(no glitches, accelerated performance) when SLI is enabled, while the glitches are experienced on my machine with sli disabled. This does strongly suggest that there is a driver issue, unless firefox behaves differently when it detects that sli is enabled.

(In reply to Jeff Gilbert [:jgilbert] from comment #43) > This looks like an nvidia driver bug, so it looks like for now, we should > blocklist hw accel on win8+nvidia. For metro we are currently forcing D2D on all the time. If we're going to blacklist large sets of cards on Win8, we'll need to find a suitable work around for the metro browser.

The difference between your screenshots is that the "bad" one does not have proper subpixel antialiasing, only grayscale font smoothing, while the "good" one has subpixel (cleartype) rendering. I'd suggest filing a new bug about this, as it's a different problem than what's shown in the earlier images, with a specific testcase and detailed steps to reproduce if at all possible.

Still seeing issues with the release preview. But that may be because I'm running the 301.42 Win7 drivers as temporary solution for another problem, as I don't believe any problems occurred with the built-in 296.65 drivers.

Just installed Release Preview, and this issue seems to be fixed (I didn't even have to download the driver, it was pre-installed; is that normal?), but now I'm seeing the font-issue. Do we have a separate report for that yet?

I was seeing the weird fonts issue on the Win 8 CP and im still seeing it with the RP.Tried CP drivers,generic drivers from Microsoft and win7 cat 12.4 drivers,but still see weird fonts when hovering links and stuff.Using laptop with mobility radeon hd5650. BTW i noticed that in everyone's graphics stats post from about:support the "ClearType Parameters" field says "ClearType parameters not found",which is not the case in win 7.Maybe that is the cause for the weird fonts? I don't think so. I saw previously this message in my profile on Win 7. After running the ClearType Text Tuner in Win 7 to set ClearType parameters (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Make-text-easier-to-read-using-ClearType ) Firefox was able to display ClearType values. It is surely the same procedure on Win 8.

So is the random fuzzy font changing a Firefox issue or a Win8 one?Im on notebook with ATI videocard and Win8 RP and never had any kind of visual glitches or breakage.Just the random fuzzy fonts on some sites.BTW the fuzzy fonts issue is present on this site too.

I think I have seen the font issue in LibreOffice once (also win8rp, of course), so it might not even be a Firefox issue. The GFX glitches were NVIDIA only, the fonts probably too.

Font in Firefox seems rendered in two steps, 1. Step 1 - while site is loading - font is rendered 2. Step 2 - at the end of loading - font is re-rendered a little differently I also seen this while typing in Firefox - font sometimes flashes skinny then goes back to being more full normal looking. So for some reason Firefox re-renders the font - I cannot fathom this being good for performance. IE10 works fine. NV 9400M G / W8 RP x86_32

I did some testing under Windows 8 Pro 64-bit: * NVidia GeForce 8600GT with 306.97 driver * AMD Radeon HD6450 with Catalyst 12.11 driver gfx.font_rendering.cleartype.always_use_for_content => false gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled => false gfx.font_rendering.graphite.enabled => false gfx.direct2d.disabled => false > none of the described issues were reproducible gfx.font_rendering.cleartype.always_use_for_content => true gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled => true gfx.font_rendering.graphite.enabled => true gfx.direct2d.disabled => true > none of the described issues were reproducible I tested Firefox 17.0b4 and Firefox 7.0. Unfortunately I was not able to reproduce any of these issues. Granted this is not the exact same hardware/software reported in comment 113 and comment 114 but I think it's a close approximation. Based on this and the wide array of reported cards on this bug, I'm not confident sourcing the exact configuration in comment 114 will be a valuable use of time and money. Dropping qawanted from this bug for the time being. I'm not sure what more we can do.

This first appeared in Firefox 7 based on comment 0. If this is a regression we'd need to find the exact version where this started. Your help here would be greatly appreciated because we've been unable to reproduce this in QA.

Incidence is very low ...in nearly two months I have only seen it twice or three times ..it goes away if i minimize and restore, or parts of it if i move other windows over. Not very annoying as I said ...I am more bugged out by flash content always stealing focus and switching to another window or instance (like alt-tab except I am not pressing anything just open in a new tab or window, which switches to another instance at random or plays in the background)...but that is another topic... To the issue at hand, I am not sure I can reproduce it, but will try with those settings over the weekend.

If I were to suspect something I would blame a conflict in accessing resources between playing a video in KMP or PotPlayer (VMR9HQ render) and having opened a Firefox window with a Youtube video while switching/pausing between the two ...therefore a driver issue to be solved by ATI in the way it addresses windows 8 and its new DWM or even WDDM 1.2 (or whatever implementation W8 has).

Just wondering ist there any update regarding this issue? I am using Firefox v21.0 and have a Radeon HD 7870 and also experience GFX glitches if hardware acceleration or more precise gfx.direct2d.disabled is false (if I set this to true I can keep hardware acceleration itself and the glitches are gone) I am mostly experiencing it when scrolling, especially when opening the history (order by last visited page) and it effects the scrollbar and the text that is scrolled.
