User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:7.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0
Build ID: 20110916091512

Steps to reproduce:

Click link in a Google Reader app

Actual results:

Firefox opens showing an empty page and label "Enter Search or Address" in the address field.

Expected results:

Firefox should hint that it is loading a clicked link.

On mobile connection getting <title> might be very slow and this might lead to misunderstanding that Firefox is not actually opening your page, but instead is in empty page state.

Suggested fix: show external URL in the address bar before getting <title> to avoid the user confusion.
I guess this is more or less related to bug 623636.

It also happens when a new window is opened from a page script.
In fact, it seems that Firefox desktop is doing the same.

Weird, the Firefox desktop bug is bug 254714. That bug is supposedly fixed, but I can still reproduce it with the testcase here.
Ok, filed bug 689597 for Firefox desktop now.
The Firefox desktop bug is bug 610357, it turns out. See comments there (especially from bzbarsky) to find out how to fix this.
