Currently, you can unexpectedly leave the application if you happen to hit the hardware back button one time too many after browsing a few pages. This should ideally be prevented.

I'm not sure if this is possible to do without breaking things like going back to e.g. the Twitter app from a quick URL lookup using Firefox as its target — but we should try to get this fixed. Going back to the Home screen makes no sense, that's what the Home button is for.
To clarify: I agree that we should't break the Twitter -> Firefox -> Back button -> Twitter flow, but wondering if there's a way to detect if the Home screen is the next element on the stack and prevent it from being triggered.
On one hand, this is pretty much how Android applications minimize to the background (every application does this). On the other, I like what Dolphin Browser HD does with a prompt for: [Minimize/Exit/Cancel].
This just isn't how android works and would be counter to user expectations. For instance, if I have a short cut on my homescreen, click it to launch fennec and hit the back button, I'd expect that to bring me back to the home screen
