I'm not sure who to assign this bug to (or what component it is)

In the debug output I see that the tinderbox url is reloading about every minute but the sidebar is collapsed and I don't have any windows open to that url.

I'm not sure whether this is a bug or a feature. Yes, the sidebar will continue
to refresh its panels even when it's hidden.

If you mean "it shouldn't do that", well, then talk to slamm & nisheeth.
Sidebar panels are webshells, typically loaded with documents that have an
EXPIRES header to force them to periodically refresh. I doubt that the webshell
is smart enough to not reload its content when its invisible, and then reload
it at exactly the time it becomes visible again.

Yes, there is info in the release notes on how to turn it off.

I am going to re-open this bug so I can track it.
The intent of this bug (or my desire) is for the sidebar to not produce any
network traffic (or local traffic?) when it isn't open. Call it an RFE if
necessary.

reassign bug to slamm since he seems to know about this area...

Steve, is this our bug?
Status: NEW → ASSIGNED
I can do this if I remove the sidebar from the content tree when the sidebar is
closed.

Currently, removing the sidebar works fine. However, when I add it back in, the
order of the content nodes gets messed up. The sidebar, the splitter, and the
content area get reversed. I need to file another bug for that.
Another note: Marketing may actually want the sidebar to continue loading while
it is close. I am adding John Gable to the cc list.

Although we don't need every Sidebar panel loading even while the Sidebar is
closed, we probably want the Flash panel to load and re-load even if the Sidebar
is closed. TBD based on other spec discussions, etc.
I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I don't think it's a good idea to
generate *any* network traffic without the user first generating some. For
example, sometimes I want to run navigator and do a quick edit or browse a local
file or check a message. In these cases I won't necessarily have dialed up or
connected to my ISP. Why should my computer even try connecting? I *hate* when
my computer *LOCKS UP* because I don't have a network connection.

Also, John, are you distinguishing between not having a sidebar and having it
collapsed?

Steve days the engineering work is done. It's just a matter of deciding on the
right policy. Let's move this to M8 until we decide ...
Component: XPApps → Sidebar
Summary: tinderbox keeps being reloaded even tho not at that url → Tinderbox reloads even when sidebar closed
To fix this correctly, we should pull the sidebar out of the document tree when
it is closed. That is why this bug depends on bug #7222.

Changing component to "Sidebar".

Sidebar content is no longer loaded when the sidebar is closed. The one
exception is the flash data. That is a policy decision that does not belong on
my bug list (and really belongs in a separate bug).

Marking FIXED.
