Details

Running Mozilla build 2001021508, accessing NNTP server (currently 24.2.9.61)
from behind firewall. After viewing a few articles (variable number, usually
less than ten, with no clear trigger) it opens a new connection for every
subsequent article. Sometimes, initial connection (on program start) does not
close. Old connections remain open, but are inactive. Number of connections
grows until server will allow no more (limit of five open connections).

Exiting Mozilla results in a crash: mozilla causes an invalid page fault in
msgnews.dll; this only occurs when NNTP connetions are open. Firewall rules for
mozilla.exe are identical to those for Outlook Express and Communicator, which
do not have this problem (i.e., the firewall is not preventing mozilla from
closing connections).
What you're seeing it most likely caused by or accelerated by bug 65927, "News
leaves connections to server open (too many connections)". The crash is unique
(and was reported by someone else today, too.)

Just so you know, I'm duping this bug against bug 71024 because it has a Dr.
Watson log.
Agreed, this looks to be the dupe. 71024 is going to be patched soon, this
should be reopened if its not fixed after the checkin.
