User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1
Build ID: 20111220165912

Steps to reproduce:

Firefox 9.0.1, Mac OSX 10.6.8. Went to "About Firefox", then hit "Check for updates".

Actual results:

Manual check for updates automatically downloaded a new update, rather than just checking (see bug 606406), and downloaded a new major version with no warning that the update is actually a change of versions.

Expected results:

I should have gotten a dialogue box telling me that there were no updates to 9.x (or that there was one and did I want to download it). If it also then told me "There's a newer major version, do you want to upgrade?", I'd know that there was a newer version but I wouldn't be surprised if I thought I was downloading 9.x+ and got 10.x instead.

This is still currently true, but I couldn't find the duplicate bug.

I tried this with Firefox 21 on Mac0SX 10.7.5, with the Preference option set for manual update. Going to the About box began downloading the new release and informed me that restarting would update Firefox. This doesn't look like a clear choice to run a manual update.

The about dialog was designed this way by Firefox UX without this info and the App update dialog does display this info. App update already provides this info to the consumers and this will need to be changed in the Firefox about dialog UI.

Note: if there is a dupe it would likely be in the Firefox Product.
