We want to ship Firefox with a good list of search engines for Malay.

We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and Milos (Milos Dinic) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Muhammad, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Firefox/Productization>.

For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives:
Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Amazon, eBay, Wikipedia

After we decided on a particular search engine, Milos will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. Muhammad, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information.

Once we have a specification on what the searchengines for Malay should look like, the localization team and Milos will work on an implementation on that. This should happen by the localization team creating and attaching patches for the desired changes, and requesting review from Milos. After a successful review, the localization team will land them.

Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by Milos, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by Milos. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.

The Malay team will be driving this bug to completion.

Hi Pike,

The particular search engine need as same language we localized for firefox (Malay)? Just want to know first.

@syafiqmazli
The results of the search engines should be of value to people using the browser. Search results in German would probably not be, whereas search results in English might.

wikipedia in Malay is an obvious candidate in favor of the English wikipedia. On the other hand, google, yahoo, bing, twitter probably just work as is. ebay happens to have a local site, http://www.ebay.com.my/, but that might not be the most popular of the kind. We'd need your input on that. Is there anything like Amazon?
Yes, basically popular website such Mudah.my & Lelong.my. Most popular local website like Amazon but do you need us research based on statistic website like Alexa or somewhere proven statistic?
Milos can help with the reviews, but yeah, alexa is one of the tools we would want to look at.
Muhammad,

Do you need any help deciding on the list of which search engines to use?
Yes, Milos.

I think we could stick to Google as search engine seem number 1 rating in Alexa.com. Others,

Live Bookmark : Lowyat.Net
Global search : Google.com
e-Commerce Search : Mudah.my
Specific interest : Wikipedia
RSS Reader : Google Reader
Muhammad,

Live Bookmark is an option we don't ship anymore, so we don't actually need it. RSS reader is something we'll deal with in another bug.

So, what you're saying is:

1) Google
2) Yahoo!
3) Bing
4) Mudah.my
5) Wikipedia(ms)
?

This looks good, but a few questions for you:

a) do you think we could add one more e-commerce search engine, like Amazon or eBay? Would any of those 2 work for Malay users?
b) we recently started using twitter search as default in our en-US builds, so, do you think that would be a good feature for Malay users, too?

Given we're sure on Mudah.my, would you please contact them and ask for permission to use their services? Once you get it, please forward it to milos@mozilla.com .
Hi Milos,

1) Google
2) Yahoo!
3) Bing (could we change to duckduckgo?)
4) Mudah.my
5) Wikipedia(ms)

a) I think eBay because few reason related to malaysian users experience example shipping and transaction payment and etc.

b) totally agree!

I don't have contact Mudah.my owner but will try to sending them email and asking permission but could i cc'ed you or anyone here inside email?

Thanks,

Syafiq
Milos, Can you let us know if you need any other information?
Milos, can you go ahead with ebay and not mudah, and file a follow-up bug on that?

Sounds like we just need a plugin for wp-ms.
Milos, Can you please resolve this bug based on Pike's comment.( #10 )
Muhammad,

Based on your answers to my questions and a talk Axel and I had with Arky, following looks like a deal for me:

Google, Bing, Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, Wikipedia(ms), Twitter.

Aside from that, I'll file a bug so that we can keep track of Mudah.
