Speaking as a Lubuntu 11.10 user running Aurora, I'd like to ask that, whatever solution is implemented, it is properly tested on non-GNOME desktops by the time it reaches Aurora. Just defaulting to "open with xdg-open" rather than "Ask" would probably be a good solution.
