Images are not loaded until hover state.

If we just made the whole image a sprite, that'd be taken care of :)

Sorry Chris, I was unable to complete this. This shouldn't be to tough a fix with something like: http://spritegen.website-performance.org/

Making the sprite images and doing the CSS shouldn't be much. Maybe 2 hours max.
