Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1
Build ID: 20120713134347

Steps to reproduce:

Update from 13.0.1 to 14.0.1

Actual results:

After closing Firefox and restarting, pressing + button to open new tab shows boxes of past history from a session at the time of Firefox update. Clear-Recent-History does not clear. I even tried Reset-Firefox.
This bug seems more serious. Even older histories that show by pressing x button on the history boxes show very old history. There is one with a date in the title: March 1, 2012. It seems that even in the previous versions where I had clean new tab, the old history was still preserved somewhere.

Note that deleting (x) the history boxes does not delete them permanently. They show up again in new tab.

Confirmed.

I can reproduce this bug on Firefox and Nightly:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0
Windows 7 x64

Steps to reproduce:
1. Clear history from the Beginning
2. Close Firefox
3. Re-open Firefox
4. Press "ctrl-t" to open a new tab.

Actual Results:
There is a list of frequently visited webpages. Even though the image is not displayed, you can click on the box to navigate to that website. Also tested with add-ons disabled with the same result.

Expected Results:
The list of frequently visited webpages should be empty.

Today, the new tab is all clear. I installed 14.0.1 on July 17, 7:30 AM, so after 6 days, I am guessing, places.history.expiration mechanism finally cleared up all remaining history.
is this still reproducible?
I can't reproduce it with steps from comment 2 for current nightly. However about:newtab is not cleared until browser is restarted. This is a bit inconsistent compared to 'History/Clear recent history...' command which refreshes about:newtab immediately (it seems to notify newtab instances by 'nsPref:changed' subject).
